It’s films like these that make you glad you were born a man. I don’t think Alfie was an entirely bad man — selfish sure, but not so much more selfish than the average Joe. It’s interesting him calling pretty girls “bird”; these days a similar way to refer to girls would be “chick”.
I usually try very hard not to interpret things in a modern lens. It’s a difficulty, you see — I feel I should respect girls, even when maybe there’s nothing inherent about women to be respected. I have a mother sure, but I don’t have to treat every woman the way I treat my mother — I’m sure most women wouldn’t want to be treated that way.
There was that scene where Alfie cried over his aborted child and I really felt that. Despite all the things he does, we can see that he is still human. Maybe I’m a bit traditional, but I do blame the women as well — it’s not like they’re completely innocent. They have autonomy as well — they chose to get with him, when they shouldn’t have.
